Chapter 3The advantage of Kairos This section brings up some good points. I had to write a paper for my biology class a couple of semesters ago. I chose to write mine on The Genome Project since I have always had an interest in the topic but new very little about it. It is always easier to write about something you are already interested in or may already know a lot about. It also brings up the point of narrow down your topic some topic may be so open ended that you may have too much information to write a good research paper with number of pages or words one may have to work with. Connecting to Your Writing This section is very helpful in narrowing down or deciding whether or not a topic one has selected would be a good one. It also makes you think if there is going to be enough information to research in order to complete the paper or to make it more manageable. I know in the past this has happened to me I picked a topic that was way to open ended and could encompass way to many subtopics. I had to change my topic to a more concentrated one. It also suggest using the internet for research this may lead one into a different direction to help narrow down or expand on their research. I am using this method during the process of how I can narrow down my current topic I am thinking about for this first project Wadsworth Handbook Chapter one reiterates some points already made in other chapter readings. Like having a purpose, considering your audience, and narrowing down you topic. I took ENG 111 a couple of semesters ago and I learned these items as well. I have been using them since even at a work and personal level. It also talks about different types of writing and how they may be affected by different factors. I have not taken these factors into consideration yet for this project. Chapter two discusses clustering which I find helpful when writing papers or even brainstorming. I have been doing a lot of brainstorming lately I am starting a business and have a lot of things to take into consideration. It is amazing how many things you can think of that are no obvious in the beginning. I tend to do more of this then something like free writing. I do use free writing during research in order to write down information I find important in a little more detail then I would with brainstorming or clustering. I am sure I will be doing a lot of this for this project Chapter 41 refers to knowing your assignment before moving to the topic. I have made this mistake before I did not do my research on my assignment before choosing a topic and ended up with a topic I was not interested in and had to make lots of changes to accommodate the outline of the topic. I like the recommendation of keeping a notebook and mapping out search strategies. The suggestion on “Recording Source Information” whether it is summarized, paraphrased, or quoted is a great way to keep these types of information organized.

I also thought the brainstorming in the Wadsworth Handbook was a good strategy. Most of the time I go into writing papers without brain storming. I find that when I do brainstorm the paper is a lot more organized then when I do it off the cuff without any kind of planning.
