This week’s deadline was interesting I found Chapter #7 very helpful and am excited to apply what I have learned to my project. It almost makes me feel a little behind of the game since I did not have all the information need to get through al of the exercises I chose. I found it interest the reporting vs. arguing section gave a number of us something to think about. I also notice that it was the same thing with the narrowing down of different aspects of our projects. These items made me feel not so alone and it is interesting that we have gained some valuable information from this deadline.

For school I have written a couple of research papers for science classes. I feel the purpose of these was to collect data a rewrite what I have learned with no other definitive purpose in mind. Its goal was to prove that I did the necessary research to prove my competency of the topic. For both these projects it was my instructor. I just wanted a good grade to be honest.

For my job I wrote a paper for both work and school. It was a proposal and the purpose was to provide my employer with information on reasoning for a promotion with in the department. My goal was to provide information to support the fact that our growth justified a change in structure to provide more opportunity for all parties involved. The audience was my instructor, my peers, and my supervisors within my work place. I wanted them to serious consider make the proposed changes or to at least look at the way we were structured and make what they felt were appropriate changes

What is your rhetorical situation?

How can avoiding high fructose corn syrup make a difference in your diet?

The purpose for me researching this topic is to answer many questions I had about the product. I wanted to know why it was the risk are of consuming this product. I also wanted to know if any of these risk affected ones health and if so why. How it affect the body and why it is different the other types of sugars. Why they it is put into products that did not use to contain ant type of sugars.

The intended audience is my instructor, peers and clients. The main audience looking at this as a real project would be my clients. I want to be able to educate individuals on healthy diet choices and to give them information to consider when make choices in purchasing products.

The context on my topic falls under the controversy in health related fields. I work in the spa and fitness industry and have struggled with my weight my whole life since I can remember. My beliefs and understandings have made me more interested in this topic

Generating responses to your research question

How can avoiding high fructose corn syrup make a difference in your diet?

What are the risk are of consuming this product?

High caloric intake

Affected energy levels

Irregular hormonal response to eating

High tryglicerides

Would any of these risk affect ones health and if so why?

Weight gain, leading to obesity

Diabetes

How does it affect the body?

It confuses the receptor not letting the body know when it has had enough to eat

Is processed by liver differently

Does not respond with insulin like regular sugars

Why it is different the other types of sugars?

The body recognizes it differently then other sugars and confuses the leptin and gerhilin hormones.

Why does it get put into products that did not use to contain ant type of sugars?

It is mainly used as a sweetener, but it is also used as a preservative and makes bread fluffier and made with it browns better.

Understanding your warrants

I know I will need to collect data to support my warrants and will need to further question and get feedback from classmates friends and colleagues. The amount of information I have gather so far will be a good start but this section has presented me with a new challenge. I will need some time to work this out but It will be very helpful for my WP#3.

Developing rebuttals

The counter arguments I need to consider is that HFCS does not cause obesity it is contributed to many factors. Another counter argument is that is not different then table sugar. One of my sources counter argues the fact that HFCS in soda does not contribute to obesity but does not approach the product as a whole. The other source I am planning on including counter argues that HFCS is no different the other types of table sugar

The sources I have found so far are both weak in my mind. I need to continue my leads to complete this section. At this point in my research I think I am going to have to visit the library to

Finding the sources I planned on using for this project was my first step. After compiling all of my sources I started to organize them and find out in there was anything I was missing or if they may not work based upon the assignments right away I realized I did not have enough sources to provide and type of depiction from others views so I went back and looked at some of my sources I did not plan on using. I did have several that would work I just did not think they were solid enough to include. I did find that they have, lead me to other search terms and I think they ended up working for their purpose. Once I had all my sources collected I research about the authors of each source to develop credibility of each writer. Then I proceeded by writing my bibliographies for each source as outlined. I think I would make changes from he beginning by having my information more organized. I have learned a lot about collecting sources from this project. Like how to organize, proper notations, validate credibility of authors. These will all be helpful in future projects.

I am proud of the information I was able to collect on the authors of the sources. I also liked the annotations of each source. Where I feel I was concerned or my project was lacking was on the caparison of sources. If I had more time I would probably find more parallels between each and every source. I really feel like I only included obvious comparisons and did not concentrate on all of them.

I did make some changes based on my peer reviews they always seem to be helpful. Most of them where minor punctuation and how I had my sources formatted.

I really feel that I have better tools to collect data in the future a to be able to organize and make great notations on my sources as collecting them. The newest strategy for me was developing credibility for my sources and what to watch for while collecting my sources.

My outcome was to evaluate my sources and find the ones that would be most stable and creditable for my project at the same time including some sources that depicted a different point of view. The only place I feel my project may lack is the amount of information I was able to include on different points of view. However I do think it has provided me with some great leads to find information for my final project. For me this project really helped me analyze the data of my sources. It also contributed to what different aspects I should be looking for in my sources. The outcomes I would really like my next project to reflect is how my sources have worked for my project. To provide the support and credibility I need them to and to include another point of view.

Introduction

While collecting these sources I have found several different health affects of high fructose corn syrup I will concentrate on. Researchers have done studies connecting HFCS consumption to excessive weight gain and other health issues including diabetes. The main controversy of this product is its blamed for is obesity. Many argue it affects the human body differently causing hunger sooner after eating than one would with other types of sugars, which then causes one to eat more often through out the day raising the caloric intake of an individual. It also is blamed for obesity because of the number of foods it is found in today, these products did not contain any type of sugars in the past in turn this raising the amount of daily caloric intake. Many defend the product by debating there has been a lot of changes in society to date that could be contributing to obesity. For example, humans lead more sedentary lifestyles and if food producers did not use HFCS in products then sugar would be causing the same affects. It is also debated that it is no worse then plain old table sugar and it is the same thing as eating a piece of fruit.

Sources

Howard, 2006, Sugar or Sweetener?, The Environmental Magazine Mar/Apr2006, Vol. 17 Issue 2, p40-41, 2p

This source comes from ebcohost from the MCC library. Brian Howard is a freelance writer from Connecticut. The main focuses of his articles are about food, nutrition, and sports. I could not find any information about him that may cause bias. His beliefs were unclear that could have contributed what he wrote about this topic. The article contains information about the rise in the amount of sweeteners Americans consume in a year and also talks about products it is used in. It also mentions a research that I have been researching the finding of to help support my point. This article contains information about other alternative sweeteners and why these may be better for us. This article did not provide me with a lot of information to support my topic but it did give me some ideas to continue my research.

Jacobson, 2004, High Fructose Syrup and the Obesity Epidemic, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Vol. 80, 1081, 2004

This source comes from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and was written by Michael F.Jacobson from The Center for Science in the Public Interest. Mr. Jacobson’s wrote in response to a publication written by Mr. Bray and Mr. Popkins about HFCS in soda and its link to obesity. This information is helpful by providing me with more avenues disputing this controversy. I have been unsuccessful finding the information on the internet, I will continue my research of my leads at the library and use them for my final project. Even though I was not able to get immediate information for my project it will be helpful in providing a rhetorical situation for my audience.

Forristal, 2001, The Murky World of High-Fructose Corn Syrup, Wise Traditions in Food, Farming and The Healing Arts, Weston A. Price Foundation fall 2001

This source came from the Wise Traditions in Food, Farming, and The Healing Arts, a quarterly magazine published by Weston A. Price Foundation. Linda Forristal CCP, MTA is a former Board Member of Weston A. Price Foundation. The Weston A. Price Foundation is a non-profit charity to support the on going research of whole foods and nutrition. This was one of the first articles I discovered and it has been beneficial in leading me to other research data and articles. My choice to use this source was based on the fact it provides some diversity for my sources. The writer included a short detail on consumption, enzymes used to make the HFCS, how these enzymes make it unnatural, what products it is used in, and information on a research project that was conducted. It also included how the need for this product came at a good time for the corn industry. I found that this source gave me information in the beginning to think about and research more in depth. This source is similar to other sources in the information it pertains to. However, this article was written in a more brief to the point fashion without a lot of technical detail like most of my other sources.

Pollan, 2006, Six Rules for Eating Wisely, Time Magazine 6/12/2006, Vol. 167 Issue 24, p97-97, 1p, 6c

This source comes from ebcohost from the MCC library. Michael Pollan wrote this article and it appeared in Time magazine. Michael is a writer for The New York Times and is a professor at UC Berkley. He is an environmental journalist and has written a couple of different books pertaining to diet. He believes in eating healthy and has an interest in this topic. The article is helpful by supporting the fact of trying to avoid high fructose corn syrup. It is also written in away that is very basic and not over whelming for the reader. It main purpose is to make recommendations to consumers to avoid HFCS in their diets and list a number of foods and drinks to watch for HFCS in. The thing I like about this article the most is that the writer conveyed a message to be health conscious and to watch labels but did not give the impression he was bashing the product.

Schorin, 2006 High fructose corn syrups, Part 2: health effects. Food Science, In Nutrition Today, Vol. 41, p70(8) 2006.

This source came from Thomas Gale through the MCC library. It was written by Marilyn Schorin unfortunately I was unable to find any background information on her. I found this article interesting in the fact it is trying to debate the overall causes of the consumption of high fructose corn syrup and there may be a correlation with other deficiencies in the body that cause related health issue in combination to its consumption. I need to obtain a full article of the writers finding, and more background information before coming to any conclusions.

Elliott, Keim, Stern, Teff, & Havel, 2002, Fructose, Weight Gain, and Insulin Resistance Syndrome, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 76, 911-922 2002.

This article comes from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Peter J Havel received his Ph.D in Endocrinology, and works for University of California, Davis nutrition department. Judith S Stern S.M. Sc.D. Nutrition from Harvard university School of Public Health and works for University of California, Davis nutrition department. Karen L. Teff, received her Ph.D. from McGill University she is presently a working at Monell Chemical Senses Center. These writers co-wrote this article to bring awareness to the nutritional field on the effects fructose has on weight gain and insulin resistance. This article is technically written providing me with important technical information I will need to come to any final conclusions. I have gathered information from this paper about the foods HFCS is in, how it effects insulin levels, its effects on energy levels, how the body metabolizes it, how our organs process it and what the end result is for all of these. The most beneficial attribute of this paper is that with the number of writers it includes it has covered a wide variety of information that is important to my project.

Fructose on Plasma Lipids in Healthy Subjects, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 79, No. 5, 711-712, 2004.

This source came from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Bantle JP is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Raatz SK is the Senior Research Associate at the University of Minnesota. Thomas W Moon did this research at the Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia. Apostolos P. Georgopoulos, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor of Neuroscience and Neurology at the University of Minnesota. This article covers a research study that was conducted on 24 healthy subjects. The publication covers the results of the effects HFCS has on the Plasma Lipids in Healthy subjects. This study provides information for my project to better understand how HFCS effect insulin and weight gain on humans. I chose this source because the writers of this paper are very creditable in terms of education and background in related fields. This source is very similar to the article titled Fructose, Weight Gain, and Insulin Resistance Syndrome because it is written very technically, cover the same ideas but in a different manner, and comes from the same publication.

Bantle, Raatz, Thomas, & Georgopoulos, May 2004 Effects of Dietary

(Unknown at this time) Myth: High-Fructose Corn Syrup Is Especially Fattening, An Epidemic of Obesity Myths, 106-107, 2004

This source was published in a book called An Epidemic of Obesity Myths. This source is debating that HFCS found in soda specifically is a cause for the rising obesity epidemic. Which was written and published by Mr. Bray and Mr. Popkins. The same article that was debated in another source I used by Mr. Jacobson. Although the excerpt is very short it as well has giving me a lead on controversy surrounding this topic. This is beneficial information for my project to help me understand the debate and controversy of this topic. This article as well will need to be followed up by more research to finalize it for my final draft.

Conclusion

The information collected here has giving me a more focused audience, and research objective for my final project. In the collecting of this data, establishing these sources, and the individuals that wrote them will give me some solid leads for future research for my specific topic and audience. The most helpful thing is the sources I found debating the research I am working with. It has been hard to find research that supports the debate especially with quantity and credibility. I will be able to take these leads find other authors and articles to help build up the other perspective that I feel I am lacking at this point in my project.

In this week reading reflection I found the term reporting interesting. I have never thought about it up until this point and feel that my project is mostly reporting because until recently I had not developed and strong position on my topic. I also found what is your rhetorical situation helpful in establishing my exact research question. The section on claims, reasons and warrants will be very useful for my project and I feel as I have already established a lot of that information. This section has given me a better understanding on how to properly covey my message. I also like the following section on offering evidence. I have gathered almost all the information thus far as outlined by the bullets and I plan on including in my final project. In the section providing counter arguments I find this useful and want to incorporate in into my project however I have not found any creditable source yet. This may not mater or it may even make my position stronger this I will need to work on since I do not feel I have a well organized plan of action to accomplish this.

In this deadline I found it interesting on how I noticed I tend to start my sentences with a lot of the same openings. I actually found it challenging to make these changes. I feel that the majority of this information will be helpful for all future projects. It seems most of us struggle with the some of the same things, yet some are much better then others in certain areas the peer reviews are always useful to provide insight about information we may miss or are not practicing. While making revisions to my sentences in the grammar exercise I noticed some other changes in my work that need to be done on the paragraph in general. I was able to apply this to other paragraphs as I revised each source.

This was one of the first articles I discovered it has been beneficial in leading me to other research data and articles. However, article was written in a short to the point fashion without a lot of technical detail like most of my other sources.

I found the information in chapter 14 building complex sentence very helpful in rewriting my sentences I paid attention to its suggestions and made some minor changes to a couple of sentences. I chapter 15 breaking up strings of compound sentences, and varying sentence openings were very helpful. For this paragraph I did not find a lot of changes to be made based on breaking up strings of compound sentences but did find that I use the same opening a lot in this paragraph so I looked it over and made the necessary changes.

It makes it even more difficult when we are reading it in a blog format since you know the formatting has changed. It is interesting how each individual leaves out certain task(s) especially in a draft. We do not seem too much infuses on particular details as we do drafts. The part I do like about peer reviews is it always seems to help you understand the project a little better and provides new ideas and direction for the final version. I noticed I need to change or add to my final draft is an analysis of how and why your source allows you to better understand your purpose and audience for your final research paper. I also need to look into moving my citations to the top of my paragraphs the source I referenced showed them at the bottom so I will verify what is correct. I also may want to add a little more information to some of my sources. This I know needs to happen with a couple of them that are lacking because I need to continue research.

In this lesson I learned some great new tip for my WP#2 &WP#3. For wp number two I based on chapter 11 I went back and made sure my document was set up correctly with spacing, margins, and paragraphs. The after doing my peer reviews I learned that narrowing down a topic as much as possible in the beginning is much more time efficient. It seems we all kind of struggled with exactly where we are going to end up with or projects. It is amazing how one more subtopic in a project can change the amount of work and the final outcome. My conversation with Shelly was very helpful. It gave me some direction on my WP#3 project that I was hesitant about. It also made WP #2 a lot easier to do touch up by me now knowing what two perspectives I was trying to convey. I felt a lot of the information from chapter 11 applied to wp number three and will be very helpful to put that project together and give it more appeal
